The Urban Youth Development Symposium networking and summit event will be held on the 4 December 2009. The meeting will bring together national and international sports athletes, representatives from sports-related organizations (such as the International Olympic Committee), sports foundations, the private sector, Government representatives, and young people active in the sports and urban development sector.
The symposium will focus on youth employability through sports, finding more effective ways of engaging young people in its work through sports, better usage and provision of recreation spaces in informal urban areas, and the social benefits accruing from sporting as a tool for urban development. The potential for sports in mobilizing and engaging youth is well recognized by UN-HABITAT’S Youth Empowerment Programme, and it is through this well known potential that the symposium will explore ways of expanding the positive impact of sports activities on disadvantaged slum youth.
