CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS / International Conference on Human Rights in Southeast Asia [contributed with thanks by Aparna Basnyat, UNDP RC Bangkok]: will bring together members of the academia, civil society, national and international agencies and the media who work to promote greater understanding and better protection of human rights in the region. It will provide valuable space for dialogue and exchange of knowledge and experience among diverse groups of participants from within and outside Southeast Asia. If you are interested in presenting a paper on one of the identified themes for the conference which include: Universality and particularity of human rights; Individual and collective rights; Gender, sexuality and women’s rights; Rights of vulnerable and marginalized groups; Peace, conflict, security and human rights; Challenges to human rights in Southeast Asia; and, Media, advocacy and popularization of human rights, please submit an abstract by 30 June 2010. CALL FOR NOMINEES / HUMAN RIGHTS DEFENDERS TULIP 2010 [contributed with thanks by Anna Boelens, UNDP]: Nominations are now being accepted for the Human Rights Defenders Tulip 2010 which is a human rights award presented by the Dutch government to an individual who has shown exceptional courage in protecting and promoting the rights of fellow citizens. FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITY / INTER-AMERICAN COMMISSION ON HUMAN RIGHTS –OAS: The IACHR fellowship provides an opportunity for young lawyers from OAS Member States to understand and apply the mechanisms of protection of the Inter-American system of human rights. The fellowship runs from 01 Sept. 2010 – 15 Aug. 2011. The deadline to submit applications is 23 June 2010. Read more here.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY / HREA DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAMMES: HREA organizes specialized certificate courses via distance education for human rights defenders and educators, development workers and staff members of social justice organizations, international and inter-governmental organizations. TRAINING OPPORTUNITY / ADVANCED GENEVA TRAINING COURSE (AGTC) ON INTERNATIONAL LAW and ADVOCACY: The main objective of the course is to empower human rights organizations by training their representatives to effectively use the United Nations (UN) human rights mechanisms. The AGTC takes place parallel to the sessions of the Human Rights Council and is based on an interactive experiential approach and address theoretical and practical aspects of international human rights law as well as the role of NGOs in improving the implementation of human rights treaties and standards. The course provides human rights defenders with the opportunity to experience first-hand the UN human rights mechanisms in action. Applications will be reviewed as of 20 May 2010. LEARNING OPPORTUNITY / MINORITY RIGHTS, INDIGENOUS PEOPLES & HUMAN RIGHTS LAW COURSE – IRISH CENTRE FOR HUMAN RIGHTS: The aim of the course to be held 14 – 19 June 2010, is to provide participants with an overview of the legal, political and philosophical issues pertaining to international human rights law and its relationship to minority rights and the rights of indigenous peoples.
