OPPORTUNITIES / FILMS: BBC seeks short documentaries about life in ‘your world’

BBC is seeking short (no longer than 2 minutes) documentary video
entries about “how you see the world.” Deadline: March 12.

Applicants can use any type of camera, including a mobile phone, a
point-and-click, or a friend’s camcorder. Entries must be sent in any of
the following formats: avi, mov, wmv, mp4, mpg, flv, 3gp, wav, mp3 or
wma. Only one entry per applicants will be accepted.

BBC is looking for original films that are emotionally touching,
important or visually impactful. The first prize is HD mini-DV video
camera.

“PLURAL+”- Youth Video Festival

Open to: young people in the age 9 – 25
Deadline: 30/06/2010

PLURAL + festival is a platform for young people to express themselves on key migration and diversity issues and reinforced the belief that youth are powerful and creative agents of social change in the world.

Young people – 9 to 25 years of age – across the world are invited to free contest by submitting short videos of between one to five minutes in length and share their thoughts, experiences, opinions, questions and suggestions about migration, integration, inclusiveness, identity, the human rights of migrant and related issues; highlighting their realities as well as presenting their ideas on how to develop peaceful coexistence in diverse cultural and religious contexts.

The aim of PLURAL + is to ensure youth involvement on migration and diversity issues not just at community level, but also globally by facilitating the voice of youth to be heard around the world through a variety of media platforms and distribution (broadcast, video festivals, etc.).

Award
The PLURAL+ JURY AWARD prizes will be awarded in three (3) age-based categories:
* 9 to 12 years old
* 13 to 17 years old
* 18 to 25 years old

The PLURAL+ International Jury will select three videos (one for each age group). These awardees will receive $ 1,000 USD each as well as, when possible, an invitation (travel and accommodations expenses paid) to attend the November 12th, 2010 PLURAL + Awards Ceremony in New York City.

Eligibility
1. entrants to PLURAL+ must be youth between the ages of 9-25 (as of 30 September 2010)
2. the Entrant is the one person responsible for submitting the video

Submission procedure
Each entry package must contain:
* a fully completed and signed entry form
* a DVD of the video

The Roosevelt Summer Academy

The Roosevelt Summer Academy combines a full-time internship with a training curriculum and weekly networking events as part of an integrated program of leadership development. Our objective is to bring new, diverse, and progressive voices into the political process. The program runs for ten weeks, from June 3rd to August 12th, 2010.

During the summer of 2009, Roosevelt ran two concurrent programs: The Washington Academy and The Chicago Academy. Placements included: People for the American Way, Center for Community Change, Economic Policy Institute, The National Security Network, Progressive Caucus Policy Foundation and many others. The Chicago Academy will place ten students with different Chicago City Agencies to work on energy and environmental policy in an urban setting. Last year’s placements included: Buisness Affairs and Consumer Protection, Aviation (Green Airport Initiative), Public Building Commission and Community Development.

Call for nominations for the International Children’s Peace Prize 2010

This week the nomination round for the International Children’s Peace
Prize 2010 has officially started. Organizations and governments will be
addressed to nominate a child between the age of 12-18 years old, who
they think is performing extraordinary efforts to improve or implement
children’s rights for themselves and children in their environment.

In still too many countries children’s rights are not at all or only
partially recognized and implemented. The fact that there are children
who will stand up for these rights and make sure that they are uphold,
is very important. The Children’s Peace Prize gives these children a
platform to speak and is a recognition for their work.

Therefore, KidsRights calls out to everyone worldwide to nominate a
child who would deserve the International Children’s Peace Prize.

Now Accepting Applications for National Lead Agencies and Local Organizers

Global Youth Service Day is quickly approaching! With only two months to go, we hope your plans are under way and that you are excited to celebrate the involvement of youth in your community. We encourage all project organizers to register on www.GYSD.org.

In many countries, a National Lead Agency serves as the lead convener and organizer of Global Youth Service Day. National Lead Agencies promote GYSD in their country, organize high profile events, engage local media and government officials, and coordinate project registration and reporting. Local Organizers play a critical role – everyone who plans, registers and implements a GYSD project is a Local Organizer. Call for Nomination 2010-2012

UN-HABITAT is now inviting nomination for the 2010-2012 Youth Advisory Board. The Board will serve a two year term and comprises 12 advisors. One male and one female candidate will be picked from each of the following regions: Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, North America and West Asia.

Additionally, the board includes one observer representing young people with disabilities and two observer members appointed by UN-HABITAT; one representative from informal settlements and one external advisor.

The Youth Advisory Board advises UN-HABITAT on strategies to engage young people in sustainable urbanization and urban development, and seeks to strengthen youth participation and advocacy in youth-led initiatives. Given the important and unique mission of UN-HABITAT, we are especially interested in nomination of young people who meet the following requirements;

Candidates should be between 18 and 32 years old at the time of the elections.
Candidates must be members of youth-led or youth-servicing organizations and have access to youth networks within their regions.
For communication purposes, candidates must have good oral and written skills in English. Fluency in other United Nations languages is an asset.
Candidates should have access to and be reasonably proficient in using the internet and email.
Candidates must be available and accessible for conference calls with the rest of the members, UN-HABITAT representatives, and be able to avail themselves for Board activities.
Candidates are eligible for nomination from a region where they have proven residency of at least five years.
It is also expected that the Youth Advisory Board members shall avail themselves to attend youth focused meetings as required by UN-HABITAT, and provide quarterly reports to UN-HABITAT detailing activities and impact at local, national and global levels.

An initial assessment of candidates will be carried out by UN-HABITAT. Youth will then be invited to vote for their candidates from the list of screened candidates. The final Board Members will be selected based on the number of votes they receive and will be announced at the World Urban Youth Assembly in Rio de Janeiro.

Senior Program Officer

IATP seeks a full-time senior program officer to serve as its representative in Geneva, working on climate change, food security and economic policy. Work will be focused on the international institutions operating in Geneva and elsewhere in Europe, in collaboration with like-minded NGOs and social movements. The senior program officer will advocate for rights-based approaches to climate change, food security and trade policy in support of IATP goals. This position reports to IATP’s International Program Director.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience relating to policy makers and negotiators on sustainable agriculture, climate and economic policy, the ability to forge coalitions across sectors and cultures, and very strong writing and communication skills.

Summary Description
The Program Officer will design, implement, monitor and evaluate a portfolio of grants addressing issues relating to promoting transparent, effective and accountable government in the Middle East and North Africa region. S/he will be expected to evaluate current strategies against the changing context and identify new priorities for the future in close consultation with a broad range of activists and civil society representatives, government officials, scholars and public policy analysts. The program currently supports:

Improved capacity by non-governmental and governmental organizations to analyze, monitor and report on government expenditures and policymaking, particularly as they relate to key areas of economic and social policy; Training and educational opportunities to build individual and organizational skills and mechanisms related to promoting governmental effectiveness, accountability and transparency; Research and analysis to fill knowledge gaps and develop new tools for public awareness and advocacy; Strategic communications and advocacy to promote public awareness; Public discourse about the importance of governmental transparency, accountability and effectiveness.

10,000 GHC Ghana Innovation Prize – Open to youth from Ghana between 14 and 18

We are currently accepting applications for the Ghana Innovation Prize. The Ghana Innovation Prize will be awarded to a Ghanaian between the ages of 14 and 18 who has created an innovative solution to a pressing problem in their community, has demonstrated passion for Africa, and who has academic promise. The award will also be used to honour the community that encourages and supports this young leader.

Applicants will be judged on the scalability, impact and ingenuity of their solution to a pressing problem within an African community. Additionally, they must show a track record of academic promise and a demonstrated passion for Africa. The winner will receive 10,000 GHC – half of which will go to the young leader, and half to the community that cultivated the young leader.

Submissions are due on March 31st; after which a panel of judges from ALA and from Ghanaian business and government will choose a maximum of 25 final candidates. These finalists will be invited to a Finalist Weekend in April, 2010, where they will be asked to present their submissions to the judges. Final awards will be given in May 2010 in front of media and distinguished guests.
