Secretary’s Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls

The Secretary’s Innovation Award for the Empowerment of Women and Girls seeks to find and bring to scale the most pioneering approaches to the political, economic and social empowerment of women and girls around the globe. Funded by the Rockefeller Foundation, the award is part of the State Department’s continuing emphasis on public-private partnerships, and is administered by its Office of Global Women’s Issues. The award, and the office, are founded on the premise that the major economic, security, governance and environmental challenges of our time cannot be solved without the full participation of women at all levels of society. The Rockefeller Foundation, as part of its mission to expand opportunity and promote more equitable growth, seeks to identify innovative approaches that can be scaled to address these challenges.

Youth video competition by the Commonwealth Youth Programme (open to young people in the Commonwealth countries) (Deadline: 1 June)

The Commonwealth Youth Programme has launched a YouTube-based competition to celebrate cultural diversity and individual talent across the 54 member countries of the Commonwealth. The most original, inspiring or entertaining video will earn the Best Commonwealth Video title and a Netbook computer or iPod. The singer, musician, dancer or band responsible for the best musical video will be crowned Best Commonwealth Band/Artist and receive £200 worth of Amazon vouchers. The winners of each category will be taken to London for International Youth Day (12 August 2010).

CALL FOR ENTRIES: Youth award seeks creative digital works

Young designers, e-content creators, writers and bloggers (up to 30 years old) from around the world are invited to submit digital content to the World Summit Youth Award (WSYA) competition. Deadline to apply: June 20.

The WSYA will select and promote the best works that demonstrate young people’s potential to create outstanding, creative digital content. Nominations include: Fight Poverty, Hunger and Disease; Education for All; Power 2 Women; Create Your Culture; Go Green; and Pursue Truth!

WSYA serves as a platform for people from all UN member states to work together in efforts to reduce poverty and hunger, and to tackle ill-health, gender inequality, lack of education, lack of access to clean water and environmental degradation.

An international jury of 12 experts will evaluate the projects in two rounds of online judging, and three winners in each category will be selected.

CALL FOR EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST

GDN, in association with its regional partners CERGE-EI and EERC, is responding to a call for proposals from the European Union on the Social Impact of Emigration and Rural-Urban Migration in Central and Eastern Europe. As proposed, the project will rely extensively on country teams who will be granted $25,000 (approximately) to carry out and report their research over 12 months.

Interested teams should reply with a covering letter and CVs of proposed team members by May 10, 2010. Interested individuals who cannot find partners may still send in their applications; they will be matched with other potential team members if possible. Further details are on the GDN website.

Nominations Invited for World of Children Annual Awards Program

The World of Children Awards program was created “to recognize and elevate those selfless individuals who make a difference in the lives of children here in the U.S.A. and across the globe, regardless of political, religious, or geographical boundaries.” Awards are made in three categories, and each award carries a cash grant to help continue the honoree’s work.

The 2010 Humanitarian Award, which includes a grant of up to $50,000, recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to children in the areas of social services, education, or humanitarian services. Nominees must have created, managed, or otherwise supported a sustainable program which has significantly contributed to children’s opportunities to be safe, to learn, and to grow.
The 2010 Founder’s Youth Award, which includes a grant of up to $25,000, recognizes youth who are making extraordinary contributions to the lives of other children. Nominees must be under the age of 21.
Nominees may be individuals or groups of individuals but not organizations. Self-nominations are accepted.

The International Award

The International Award is an exciting self-development program available to all 14 to 25 year olds. Over 6 million young people worldwide have taken up the Award challenge. Young people design their own Award Programme, set their own goals, and record their own progress. The only person they compete against is themselves, by challenging their own beliefs about what they can achieve. The Programme is based around three Levels, each successive one requiring a greater degree of commitment.

  • BRONZE is for those over 14. The minimum period of participation to gain this Award is 6 months
  • SILVER is for those over 15. The minimum period of participation to gain this Award is 12 months
  • GOLD is for those over 16. The minimum period of participation to gain this Award is 18 months

It is possible to start at any Level – some participants work their way through all three, while others start at Silver or Gold. To gain an Award, participants must complete activities in four Sections for a specific minimum period of time.

2010 Take Pride in America National Awards

Presented annually, the Take Pride in America National Awards recognizes individuals, groups and organizations for outstanding stewardship projects or awareness efforts involving federal, state and local lands and waters. The awards program is open to individuals, groups and organizations that have contributed to the protection and/or enhancement of America’s public lands. Examples of these include public parks, forests, grasslands, reservoirs, wildlife refuges, cultural and historic sites, local playgrounds, and other recreation areas. For all awards categories, nominations must reflect actual, measurable accomplishments achieved through volunteer service. To be achieved through volunteer service. To be eligible, projects must be “on the ground” activities, rather than advocacy. Nominated projects and efforts must have been started and/or completed between May 1, 2009 and April 30, 2010.

The ING Unsung Heroes awards program recognizes innovation and progressive thinking in education through monetary awards. Are you an educator with a class project that is short on funding but long on potential? Do you know a teacher looking for grant dollars? ING Unsung Heroes could help you turn great ideas into reality for students. Each year, 100 educators are selected to receive $2,000 to help fund their innovative class projects. Three of those are chosen to receive the top awards for an additional $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000.

Eligibility: full-time educators, teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, or classified staff member with effective projects that improve student learning at an accredited K-12 public or private school.
