Gender Links, the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA), Gender and Media Southern Africa (GEMSA) Network and the Sol Plaatje Institute (SPI) are pleased to announce a range of awards for gender aware reporting as well as progressive leadership and institutional practice on HIV and AIDS and gender in the media. Awards will be adjudicated and held at country level from August to September before the final regional awards as part of the fourth Gender and Media Summit from 13-15 October 2010. Do you want to become an Inspirator?

MS ActionAid Denmark is right now launching a new personnel category called Inspirators. Inspirators are cross-national placement of development practitioners with significant hands on experience from development work in developing or newly industrialised countries. We are therefore looking for dedicated individuals, who would like to spend 3 to 9 months together with one of our many partner organisations in Africa, Asia, Central America and the Middle East.

Inspirators are volunteer placements. This means that you will not receive a formal salary, but you will have your travel expenses and accommodation covered. You will also receive a living allowance to cover your costs of living while abroad and 350€ to cover some of the expenses you may have in your home country while abroad. Grants: Investigative Journalists in Africa

The Forum for African Investigative Reporters (FAIR) is offering grants to investigative journalists in Africa to further their research on investigative pieces. Submissions must be received by July 31. Two grants are available worth US$3,713 each. Eight grants worth US$618 each are intended to fund investigative stories that would not otherwise be published. All investigative journalists based or operating in Africa may apply. Applications must include a general summary in English, Portuguese or French that will be used to create a shortlist of 20 applicants. Find out more

Open Meadows Foundation Grants (Deadline: August 14)

Open Meadows Foundation makes grants for projects that are led by and benefit women and girls, particularly those from vulnerable communities. Grants of up to $2,000 are available for projects that: are designed and implemented by women and girls; promote building community power; promote gender, racial, social, economic and/or environmental justice; reflect the diversity of the community served; and have limited financial access. Grants are made to international organizations (based outside the U.S.), as well as organizations/projects within the United States. All applicants must provide evidence of nonprofit registration. Peace Child International Be the Change! Programme Grants (Application for Next Round of Grants Available July 21)

“Be The Change!” is a youth-led sustainable development Action Programme related to the Millennium Development Goals which aims to empower young people around the world to “be the change they want to see in the world.” The Be The Change! grants supports young people under age 25 with projects that concentrate on the development of local communities. The kind of projects supported are projects that are genuinely youth-led, which benefit the community rather than an individual need, are projects up to £500 with a detailed budget, have two experienced and committed adults to mentor the project, have measures of achievement (indicators) by which projects may be evaluated, and can be either income-generating (funds to start up a small business and creating jobs) or it can be non-income generating (for health, education, environmental clean-up or community improvement) social programmes which are of genuine and lasting community value.

WhyHunger: Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Awards (Deadline: July 15)

The Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Awards program, administered by WhyHunger, provides grants to community-based organizations judged outstanding for their innovative approaches to fighting hunger and poverty in the United States by empowering people and building self-reliance. The awards honor those organizations that help people improve their own lives and the communities in which they live. Eligible organizations must offer program activities that go beyond emergency food, shelter, and other types of assistance to address the root causes of poverty. (Organizations providing only basic services will not be considered.) AMA Foundation Healthy Living Grant Program (Deadline: July 15 )

The Healthy Living Grant Program, an initiative of the AMA Foundation, supports grassroots public health projects that encourage healthy lifestyles in communities across the nation. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded in the following three categories: Nutrition/Physical Fitness; Alcohol, Substance Abuse, and Smoking Prevention; and Violence Prevention. Funded projects should target underserved and/or at-risk youth between the ages of 2-21. Organizations that have been in existence for at least one year and that have an annual operating budget of $500,000 or less are eligible to apply. Change for the Children Grants (Deadline: July 15)

DoSomething.org has teamed up with The Jonas Brothers Change for the Children Foundation to award project grants to individuals who are taking action in their communities across the U.S. and Canada. Do you have a sustainable community action project, program or idea that focuses on: the Special Olympics, Diabetes Awareness, or Volunteerism? Then these are the grants for you and your program! While projects that cover any cause are eligible to apply, special focus will be given to these three causes (the Jonas Brothers’ causes!). Ten projects will receive $1,500 grants for their projects or organizations. Best Buy @15 Community Grants (Deadline: July 1)

Through the @15 Community Grants Program, Best Buy teams across the United States select non-profit organizations that provide positive experiences to help teens to excel in school, engage in their communities, and develop leadership skills. This year, Best Buy Children’s Foundation will give $2 million through the Community Grants Program. Best Buy seeks applications from organizations that have current 501(c)(3) tax status and are serving a diverse population of young teens in the areas of learning, life skills, leadership or relationship development. Special consideration will be given to programs that: Serve a diverse population in local or regional communities; Build social, academic, leadership and/or life skills in early adolescents (primarily ages 13-18); Show positive results against a demonstrated community need; Reach at-risk children in working families. 2011 Global Youth Service Day Lead Agency Grants (Deadline: July 15)

Lead Agencies are local, regional, or statewide organizations across the United States, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, or New Brunswick that increase the scale, visibility, and impact of Global Youth Service Day by leading GYSD in their city, region, or state. Lead Agencies convene a planning coalition of at least 10 partner organizations that collectively engage at least 600 youth volunteers in service on GYSD, engage local media and elected officials, and plan a high profile signature project or celebration of service. Lead Agencies receive a $2,000 GYSD planning grant sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation, travel support to attend the Youth Service Institute, and ongoing training and technical assistance from Youth Service America to ensure a successful Global Youth Service Day. Past Lead Agencies have leveraged their position as a GYSD Lead Agency to strengthen their programs, form new partnerships, expand their volunteer base, garner media attention, gain support from local public officials, and secure additional funding.
