The Roosevelt Summer Academy

The Roosevelt Summer Academy combines a full-time internship with a training curriculum and weekly networking events as part of an integrated program of leadership development. Our objective is to bring new, diverse, and progressive voices into the political process. The program runs for ten weeks, from June 3rd to August 12th, 2010.

During the summer of 2009, Roosevelt ran two concurrent programs: The Washington Academy and The Chicago Academy. Placements included: People for the American Way, Center for Community Change, Economic Policy Institute, The National Security Network, Progressive Caucus Policy Foundation and many others. The Chicago Academy will place ten students with different Chicago City Agencies to work on energy and environmental policy in an urban setting. Last year’s placements included: Buisness Affairs and Consumer Protection, Aviation (Green Airport Initiative), Public Building Commission and Community Development.

The UNESCO Chair & Institute of Comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the sixth annual International Leadership Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum.
August 6-14, 2010, Connecticut

Deadline: 26/02/2010

The main objectives of the Forum are to: involve young leaders in finding solutions to emerging human rights problems; nurture individuals to be effective leaders in the field of human rights; provide an impetus for, and the empowerment of, youth leaders that will enable them to play a crucial and constructive role in the development of human rights in their communities; build a network of solidarity among future leaders in the field of human rights etc.

Participants at the forum will be individuals from all over the world who have been involved in some capacity in human rights work in their communities. Selected young people will engage through dialogue with experienced and older human rights practitioners to gain management skills and techniques and a greater understanding of human rights issues on a global level.

International Trainer of Trainers Workshop: Call for Participants

The Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with partners are organizing an international training workshop on “International Perspectives in Youth Entrepreneurship Training”. The workshop will take place from 12 – 17 April 2010, in Zambia and is intended to bring together youth development practitioners from government, employers organizations, workers organizations, the private sector, academia, and civil society. It is designed as an intensive trainer-of-trainers programme in youth entrepreneurship training. The workshop is expected to share experiences in youth entrepreneurship training in countries and introduce participants to contemporary materials, techniques and approaches developed in the field.

The UNESCO Chair & Institute of Comparative Human Rights at the University of Connecticut invites applications for the sixth annual International Leadership Programme: A Global Intergenerational Forum.

The Forum seeks to empower young leaders by involving them in finding solutions to emerging human rights problems, and nurturing individuals to be effective leaders in the field of human rights. To this end, the Forum will:

  • Introduce participants to the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
  • Build a network of solidarity among human rights leaders
  • Expand the knowledge relevant to human rights practice

  • Promote the sharing of experiences and understanding

DSD (UN DESA): Youth representatives to CSD-18

The Division for Sustainable Development (DSD) will be funding the participation of 2 youth representatives to the Commission for Sustainable Development (CSD)-18, taking place in May 2010. The nominations will be submitted by the CSD Youth Caucus by 15 February 2010.

UNICEF: Online discussion on Girls and Gender Equality

Through Voices of Youth (VOY), UNICEF’s website for children and young people, UNICEF would like to welcome you to an online discussion on Girls and Gender Equality. The discussion is part of a series of United Nations online discussions dedicated to the fifteen-year review of the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action (1995) and the outcomes of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly (2000), and will be a contribution to the 54th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) on March 1-12, 2010.

Voices of Youth would like to extend an open invitation to children and young people who would like to discuss the questions posted on the forum.
