2011 Faculty for the Future Fellowships. Developing and emerging economies to pursue PhD or post-doctoral studies in the physical sciences and related disciplines at top universities abroad. The Faculty for the Future program grows each year and has become a powerful community that today stands at 142 pioneering women scientists from 43 countries.

Faculty for the Future fellowships are awarded to women from developing and emerging economies who are preparing for PhD or post-doctoral study in the physical sciences, engineering, or related disciplines to pursue advanced graduate study at top universities in their disciplines abroad. Join Young Feminists to Learn About Gender Justice

Apply to be a part of the fourth global DAWN Training Institute (DTI), which will take place from 10 to 28 October, 2011 in South East Asia.  The main objectives of this three-week training course are to prepare young feminist activists from Southern countries for the challenges entailed in working for gender justice in the present global geopolitical and economic context; to build their capacity in understanding linkages between different issues and advocacy agendas, particularly those concerned with gender justice in its multiple and inter-linked dimensions – economic, political, ecological, social and personal; and, to strengthen feminist analysis and advocacy work in some complex areas at global and regional levels.

Build the Next Generation of Powerful Women

On September 20, 2010, Sarah Brown, Arianna Huffington and Donna Karan will host the first annual conference for New York’s most powerful women in politics, philanthropy, media, fashion and the arts. Women: Inspiration & Enterprise (W.I.E.) Symposium will be hosted by the White Ribbon Alliance and will feature powerful speakers, lively panels and informative lectures under the central theme: “Women Inspiring Women”. The WIE Symposium will be held to coincide with a United Nations review summit on the Millennium Development Goals also being held in New York.

They are calling for America’s next generation of powerful and inspiring young women to be part of this event and they need your help. They have reserved fifty seats for young women between the ages of 18-25.

Interested applications should complete a short questionnaire by August 20th. Selected applicants will be granted admission to the Symposium on September 20th, 2010 in New York City. However, applicants are required to cover any travel costs and expenses. To apply, click here.

African Women Excel Awards

The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) and the Mail and Guardian newspaper are the lead partners of the Multiplying Faces, Amplifying Voices programme. The Multiplying Faces, Amplifying Voices programme is an initiative of the African Women’s Foresight Network; a network of prominent African women led by Graca Machel.

Nominations will be called for throughout the African continent for women excelling in the fileds of Buisness, Agriculture, Media, Science and Technology. Profiles of the women will appear in the Mail & Guardian. The special awards evening will be held in March 2011 to celebrate International Women’s Day.

Man up: Young men and women’s movement combating violence against women

Man Up is an international youth-led movement combating violence against women and girls, launched in 2009. It has 50 country teams composed of young men and women. Using sport and music, Man Up will conduct a five-year campaign, with its launch event “Young Leaders Summit” in Johannesburg, South Africa during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Two hundred young men and women (18-30 years old) will attend the Summit in South Africa, and will draw together a blueprint for action (goals and strategies) towards ending violence against women and girls. There will also be workshops and other activities during this Summit, organized by the young people.

UNIFEM Essay and Photo Contest, Pacific Region, Promoting Gender Equality and Womens Human Rights

As part of CEDAW’s 30th Anniversary and International Women’s Day, UNIFEM is holding an essay and photo contest from 8 March to 2 September in the Pacific region. The theme of the contest is “Promoting Gender Equality and Women’s Human Rights – From National Commitments to Real Change.” Deadline for submissions: September 3, 2010

Contest participants are asked to tell the story of how women’s lives have changed or not changed in their country or community in photos or an essay. Please read attached flyer for full contest details.

Eligible Countries: Cook Islands, FSM, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, PNG, Samoa, Solomons, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Call For Proposals: 16 Days of Young Women’s Voices Campaign, 2010

As part of its Young Women’s Voices Campaign 2010, the Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) is inviting young women’s networks, organisations and initiatives in Southern Africa to submit proposals for campaigns and activities during the 2010 16 Days of Activism against Violence against Women. OSISA has always supported the 16 Days of Activism against “No Violence Against Women”, a global Campaign which runs from 25 November to 10 December every year. The 2010 theme is Structures of Violence: Defining the Intersections of Militarism and Violence against Women and OSISA seeks to support young women’s initiatives to speak about and put on the national agendas how the ideology of militarism affects them as young women. Calling All Young Women in Southern African to 3 Days of Celebration!

The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) and the Youth Empowerment and Transformation Trust (YETT), in collaboration with young women’s networks and formations in Southern Africa, are hosting a Southern African Young Women’s Festival (SAYWF) in Harare from 24 to 28 October 2010.

The Festival is designed to provide space for young women between 18 and 30 years of age, to come together and share experiences, share strategies and energise each other and celebrate their youth and the potential they have to advocate for social justice in their respective communities. Young women from Angola, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe are encouraged to apply to be part of this exciting event!  OSISA and partners will cover the full costs, including travel, accommodation, subsistence and training for all selected participants.
